10th Annual Australia Day Dinner

The Edmonton Australian Wine Club is celebrating its 10th Anniversary this year.Your committee has organised a creative dinner at Normands on January 26th from 6:30 pm.A feature of the evening is a wonderful dinner menu in the wonderful warm ambiance of Normands, and an opportunity to sample some of the best wines in the club’s cellar to accompany each course. There will also be food options for allergy sufferers.
The menu includes Tiger prawns and scallops served with a piquant oriental drizzle, Quail and Pheasant consomme,  Arctic Char/Char, Braised Lamb Shanks, Sticky date pudding, tea, herbal infusions and coffee with Anzac biscuits.

In addition to the starter wine, and the sticky with our special Aussie dessert, we will be featuring 3 outstanding wines with the 10th anniversary Dinner. With the Arctic Char, we have a 2003 Coldstream Hills Chardonnay from the Yarra Valley, just outside Melbourne. This wine drew very high ratings from Robert Parker
Our two feature reds, will include a wine that we tried at the Ivory during our fall walk-about. This is the 2002 Grant Burge Filsell from Barossa. This wine was so outstanding when we tasted it in September that we decided to replace a younger wine that was less mature.
Our other red is from the outstanding Torbreck Vineyards, also in the Barossa – 2003 The Struie, (shiraz) which was
purchased originally for this occasion. Parker rated this wine 95 when released so it should be showing well at our dinner.

This event is open to guests so please feel free to pass this on to anyone who might be interested in joining us.

THE AUSTRALIAN WINE CLUB

With The Commanderie de Bordeaux
Presents:
Old world vs New World
Face off Tasting
koala

Monday October 26, 2009
7:15 PM

Well-known wine expert William Bincolletto will be taking us through a tasting of two white and 6 red wines (1/2 from Bordeaux, 1/2 from Australia) The Australian wines will be wines in the Bordeaux style, so we can get an idea of how Aussie winemakers create wines using Bordeaux blends.
Our top wine from Bordeaux will be a 2002 Ch. Lynch Bages, a year which is already drinking very well. Two of the Aussie reds we will enjoy are the 1999 Mentor ( Peter Lehman) and the 1997 Coppermine Road Cabernet Sauvignon from D’Arenberg in the Barossa Valley.

We are limited to 25 attendees so first priority will be given to members and first guest. If either group does not fill their 25 spots, we can then open it up for other guests to attend. Cost is $40 each for member and first guest. Other guests $50.
