About The Club
The Australian Wine Club Welcomes New Members, Come Join Us!
WHO: We are a group of amateur wine enthusiasts from Edmonton and the surrounding area who gather for informal social and educational experiences with a focus on Australian wines. Our membership is made up of a diverse group of people who share a common interest in Aussie wines and good times. We are seeking new members to keep our group strong and rejuvenated.
FUNCTIONS: We endeavor to create unusual experiences and venues to showcase Australian wines. We try to avoid the “standard tasting format” featured by local wine merchants and liquor stores. By combining the “art and science of viticulture” with the “art of having a good time” we set ourselves apart from other clubs. Our members have a wide range of interests and therefore we tend to be creative, and innovative in our approach to tasting wine. Some of our past functions have included:
Spiegalau wine glass comparison where we learned how the different shapes of stemware can affect the taste and bouquet of the same wine.
A Bordeaux challenge where our wines went up against the “Big Boys” of France.
Lamb-on-a-spit barbie (BBQ) as well as a Stickie Night. Don’t know what a “Stickie” is? Join us, and find out.
Our most popular event is the Wine and Dine Walk-A-Bout usually held in the early fall.
A way to try out several different restaurants, appetizers and wines while getting a little exercise. Our premier event is our Australia Day Dinner held on January 26 when we get together to enjoy some of the fine wines collected by the club. The Aussie Day dinner features special cellar selections and fine cuisine that are specifically matched to enhance each other. This event allows our membership and their guests to have the “Ultimate Aussie Experience.”
Australia’s wines are diverse and up and coming: Many award winning wineries are located in Australia. The advantages of Australian wines are price and variety, without a compromise to quality. Australia’s ubiquitous wines will always be Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. Did you know that Australia also successfully produces Verdhello, Petit Verdot, Riesling, Grenache, Merlot, Muscat and Port to name a few?
HOW: Want to try a few wines without the pressure to be an expert? Join our group and bring a friend to share the experience. Wine is supposed to be fun and fascinating. Our group endeavors to make it exactly that.
