Wow, Penny’s Hill Shiraz at the Super Store for a great price.

Try out Lake Breeze Bernoota 1999, Yes 1999 its in stores, this is a Langhorne Creek Shiraz Cab blend with a great nose. Sells for about 20 bucks
Another one I like that is similar is the Temple Bruer Shiraz Malbec, Organic, 2005, also a Langhorne Creek, similar price. I would like to hear what you think, Jack

Marty’s 2007 Report from Downunder

Sunday, March 4th, 2007

Here are a few comments on wines we have enjoyed during the first part of our trip to Australia this year. We have spent all our time in Queensland, so no direct trips to the wine country. Lots of “cleanskins” available these days. Many Aussie companies have not been able to sell out their regular labels, so have sold off wines with no labels on them which are called cleanskins We have seen very good chardonnays as low as $2A per bottle, and reds vary from 4.50 to 8.50 some of them pretty good

We have tasted the following:

Peter Lehmann – 2005 Clancy’s,
2005 Semillon,
2002 Eight Songs Shiraz
The semillon was very pleasant and fresh not a long keeper. 2002 Eight Songs was really great could drink now, but will be a keeper $33A. 2005 Clancy’s at a price of $20A was very good, and great value for the money

2005 Torbreck Woodcutters Shiraz
2004 Torbreck The Steading
Both of these are excellent wines, will keep but are drinking well right now. They are in a good price range. The Steading should keep until 2012, the Clancy’s will drink earlier.

2004 Wirra Wirra “Church Block” $27A an excellent blend of Cab Sauv, Shiraz and Merlot which is drinking very well and looks good for another 5 years or so.

The 2004 Wynns Coonawarra Cabernet was chosen by Jeremy Thorpe as one of the best values around under $20A. This is a brilliant Cab, and the Wynns label is quite pleased with all their product in 04.
We also tried the 2005 Wynns Shiraz and it was disappointing Not in the same league as the Cab

2003 Ferngrove Shiraz from Falkland River in WA. Very good for an everyday drinking wine.

2003 St. Hallett Blackwell Shiraz was an excellent wine rated 94 by Jeremy Thorpe.

2004 Metala Langhorne Creek Shiraz/Cab blend, very rich spicy soft tannins, drinking well now but good through 2010.

What did you think about the Walk About?

Friday, August 25th, 2006

60 attended the 5th annual Australian Wine Walk About. The club would like to have your feed back on the event so we can improve it next year. Click on the “Comment” link below and let us know your thoughts.

Vasse Felix, “Adams Road”, Shiraz, Margaret River

Sunday, April 23rd, 2006

This is a Shiraz with a difference. We tried it for the first time on Friday and found it nicely balanced and very mellow for a Shiraz. If you are looking for Shiraz flavour with refinement try it. We found the Adams Road, 2003 at the 123 St. Liqour Store $21.49.

Even More Wine News From Marty

Monday, March 13th, 2006

While we have been enjoying the beach and the golf for some 7 weeks we also managed to try quite a few wines, some of them we mentioned in our trips to Barossa, McLaren Vale and Yarra.

One of the outstanding wines we tried was the Torbreck Woodcutters Shiraz 2003 which was rated a 90 by James Halliday. All of the Torbreck wines we have sampled were excellent and the Woodcutters was great value for price. We bought this wine for the winecellar. Check Ed at Devines for the details. We previously bought the Struie for the cellar as well.

We enjoyed several Grant Burge wines – the 2003 Nebuchadnezzar Shiraz-Cab, the 2004 Miamba Shiraz and the 2000 Meschak Shiraz. All of these wines impressed us, the Miamba, which was tasted at one of the club events a while back, is excellent value for the reasonable price cost. The Nebuchadnezzar needs time but should evolve nicely. The Meschak was still quite tannic, great fruit, and would be worth putting away for a special occasion in 5 years or so.

Some of the easy drinking wines we tried included the 2002 Brokenwood Cricket Pitch, which was just so-so, the Cockfighters Ghost (McLaren Vale) was a bit jammy, but had good fruit and we enjoyed it. Moondah Brook (WA) makes a very nice Verdelho, and Marcia was particularly fond of that one. We all enjoyed some nice rose wines, including the Mrs. Wigley from Wirra Wirra. This is outstanding and would be great drinking on a hot day.

Marcia and Rashid brought us a bottle of Charles Melton “The Father-In-Law”Shiraz (around $32) and this is an excellent wine. Don’t know if it is available in Edmonton but worth buying if you can find it.

The Two Hands “Gnarly Dudes” 2003 was really excellent, and I hope that Wade brings in more of this at the Wine Cellar.

Marcia and Rashid also were taken with the Hazyblur Shiraz from Kangaroo Island. Not sure if this is in Edmonton, but most of their wine goes to North America.

Also tried the 2002 Hillside Shiraz from Kay Brothers Amery (McLaren Vale) this wine will likely cost around $40. but has excellent potential for cellaring.

Hope to see you all at the tasting on March 27 and I will be glad to update you on any questions then.
